09e7f9f6c5 tty: vt: define an enum for CSI+m codes
It's always confusing to read all those case 0:, case 1: etc. in csi_*
handlers. Define enum entries for all those constants in CSI+m and use
them in csi_m().

beccdcfa15 tty: vt: pass vc_resize_user as a parameter
It is pretty unfortunate to set vc_data::vc_resize_user in two callers
of vc_do_resize(). vc_resize_user is immediately reset there (while
remembering it). So instead of this back and forth, pass 'from_user' as
a parameter.

Notes on 'int user':
* The name changes from 'user' to 'from_user' on some places to be
  consistent.
* The type is bool now as 'int user' might evoke user's uid or whatever.

Provided vc_resize() is called on many places and they need not to care
about this parameter, its prototype is kept unchanged. Instead, it is
now an inline calling a new __vc_resize() which implements the above.

This patch makes the situation much more obvious.

d321cd13f6 tty: vt: push console lock from tioclinux() down to 2 functions
Avoid costly user copies under the console lock. So push the lock down
from tioclinux() to sel_loadlut() and set_vesa_blanking().

It is now obvious what is actually protected.

a0b8a16812 tty: vt: pass proper pointers from tioclinux()
Pass proper types and proper pointers (the data with an offset) to the
TIOCL_* handlers. So that they need not to cast or add anything to the
passed pointer.

b3dd9bef75 tty: vt: expect valid vc when in tty ops
At least since commits feebed6515 ("tty: shutdown method") and
bc1e99d93f ("TTY: vt, add ->install"), tty->driver_data in vc is
expected to be set since tty_operations::install() till ::cleanup().

So the checks of !tty->driver_data (aka !vc) in:
* vc_do_resize() by tty -> ioctl(TIOCSWINSZ) -> vt_resize()
* do_con_write() by tty -> tty_operations::write()/::put_char()
* con_flush_chars() by tty -> ::flush_chars()
are all superfluous. And also, holding a console lock is not needed to
fetch tty->driver_data.

Note there is even a stale comment in con_flush_chars() about a race
between that and con_close(). But con_close() does not set
tty->driver_data to NULL for years already.

Drop all these in a hope I am not terribly mistaken.

0e6a92f67c tty: vt: fix 20 vs 0x20 typo in EScsiignore
The if (c >= 20 && c <= 0x3f) test added in commit 7a99565f87 is
wrong.  20 is DC4 in ascii and it makes no sense to consider that as the
bottom limit. Instead, it should be 0x20 as in the other test in
the commit above. This is supposed to NOT change anything as we handle
interesting 20-0x20 asciis far before this if.

So for sakeness, change to 0x20 (which is SPACE).

3abe1144ed tty: vt: make vtconsole_class constant
Now that the driver core allows for struct class to be in read-only
memory, making all 'class' structures to be declared at build time
placing them into read-only memory, instead of having to be dynamically
allocated at load time.

8d1b43f6a6 tty: Restrict access to TIOCLINUX' copy-and-paste subcommands
TIOCLINUX can be used for privilege escalation on virtual terminals when
code is executed via tools like su/sudo and sandboxing tools.

By abusing the selection features, a lower-privileged application can
write content to the console, select and copy/paste that content and
thereby executing code on the privileged account. See also the poc

Selection is usually used by tools like gpm that provide mouse features
on the virtual console. gpm already runs as root (due to earlier
changes that restrict access to a user on the current TTY), therefore
it will still work with this change.

With this change, the following TIOCLINUX subcommands require
CAP_SYS_ADMIN:

 * TIOCL_SETSEL - setting the selected region on the terminal
 * TIOCL_PASTESEL - pasting the contents of the selected region into
   the input buffer
 * TIOCL_SELLOADLUT - changing word-by-word selection behaviour

The security problem mitigated is similar to the security risks caused
by TIOCSTI, which, since kernel 6.2, can be disabled with
CONFIG_LEGACY_TIOCSTI=n.

Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.4-rc1.
 
 Once again, a busy development cycle, with lots of changes happening in
 the driver core in the quest to be able to move "struct bus" and "struct
 class" into read-only memory, a task now complete with these changes.
 
 This will make the future rust interactions with the driver core more
 "provably correct" as well as providing more obvious lifetime rules for
 all busses and classes in the kernel.
 
 The changes required for this did touch many individual classes and
 busses as many callbacks were changed to take const * parameters
 instead.  All of these changes have been submitted to the various
 subsystem maintainers, giving them plenty of time to review, and most of
 them actually did so.
 
 Other than those changes, included in here are a small set of other
 things:
   - kobject logging improvements
   - cacheinfo improvements and updates
   - obligatory fw_devlink updates and fixes
   - documentation updates
   - device property cleanups and const * changes
   - firwmare loader dependency fixes.
 
 All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported

There is a list of EXPORT_SYMBOL()s at the end of the file. Put them all
by their definition. This is how we usually do that.

give_up_console() lost its VT_SINGLE_DRIVER local ifndef protection as

1aaba11da9 driver core: class: remove module * from class_create()
The module pointer in class_create() never actually did anything, and it
shouldn't have been requred to be set as a parameter even if it did
something.  So just remove it and fix up all callers of the function in
the kernel tree at the same time.

18365ebf23 tty: vt: protect KD_FONT_OP_GET_TALL from unbound access
In ioctl(KD_FONT_OP_GET_TALL), userland tells through op->height which
vpitch should be used to copy over the font. In con_font_get, we were
not checking that it is within the maximum height value, and thus
userland could make the vc->vc_sw->con_font_get(vc, &font, vpitch);
call possibly overflow the allocated max_font_size bytes, and the
copy_to_user(op->data, font.data, c) call possibly read out of that
allocated buffer.

By checking vpitch against max_font_height, the max_font_size buffer
will always be large enough for the vc->vc_sw->con_font_get(vc, &font,
vpitch) call (since we already prevent loading a font larger than that),
and c = (font.width+7)/8 * vpitch * font.charcount will always remain
below max_font_size.

05e2600cb0 VT: Bump font size limitation to 64x128 pixels
This moves 32x32 font size limitation checking down to drivers, so that
fbcon can allow large fonts.

We still keep a limitation to 64x128 pixels so as to have a simple bounded
allocation for con_font_get and in the userland kbd tool. That glyph size
will however be enough to have 128x36 characters on a "16/9 8K display".

24d69384bc VT: Add KD_FONT_OP_SET/GET_TALL operations
The KD_FONT_OP_SET/GET operations hardcode vpitch to be 32 pixels,
which only dates from the old VGA hardware which as asserting this.

Drivers such as fbcon however do not have such limitation, so this
introduces KD_FONT_OP_SET/GET_TALL operations, which userland can try
to use to avoid this limitation, thus opening the patch to >32 pixels
font height.

ffc1e08972 VT: Add height parameter to con_font_get/set consw operations
The current con_font_get/set API currently hardcodes a 32-pixel-tall
limitation, which only dates from the old VGA hardware which could not
handle taller fonts than that.

This change just adds a vpitch parameter to release this
constraint. Drivers which do not support vpitch != 32 can just return
EINVAL when it is not 32, font loading tools will revert to trying 32
and succeed.

This change makes the fbcon driver consider vpitch appropriately, thus
making it able to load large fonts.

8aad24ad9d tty: vt: separate array juggling to juggle_array()
The algorithm used for scrolling is the array juggling. It has
complexity O(N) and space complexity O(1). I.e. quite fast w/o
requirements for temporary storage.

Move the algorithm to a separate function so it is obvious what it is.
It is almost generic (except the array type), so if anyone else wants
array rotation, feel free to make it generic and move it to include/.

And rename all the variables from i, j, k, sz, d, and so on to something
saner.

No need to panic in vc_uniscr_copy_line(), just warn. This should never
happen though, as vc_uniscr_check() is supposed to be called before
vc_uniscr_copy_line(). And the former checks vc->vc_uni_lines already.

In any case, use _ONCE as vc_uniscr_copy_line() is called repeatedly for
each line. So don't flood the logs, just in case.

simple clear 'u32 **lines' all over the code.

This avoids zero-length arrays. It also makes the allocation less

b74dbbe19b tty/vt: Add console_lock check to vt_console_print()
I'm scratching my head why we have this printing_lock. Digging through
historical git trees shows that:
- Added in 1.1.73, and I found absolutely no reason why.
- Converted to atomic bitops in 2.1.125pre2, I guess as part of SMP
  enabling/bugfixes.
- Converted to a proper spinlock in b0940003f2 ("vt: bitlock fix")
  because the hand-rolled atomic version lacked necessary memory
  barriers.

Digging around in lore for that time period did also not shed further
light.

The only reason I think this might still be relevant today is that (to
my understanding at least, ymmv) during an oops we might be printing
without console_lock held. See console_flush_on_panic() and the
comments in there - we flush out the console buffers irrespective of
whether we managed to acquire the right locks.

The strange thing is that this reason is fairly recent, because the
console flushing was historically done without oops_in_progress set.
This only changed in c7c3f05e34 ("panic: avoid deadlocks in
re-entrant console drivers"), which removed the call to
bust_spinlocks(0) (which decrements oops_in_progress again) before
flushing out the console (which back then was open coded as a
console_trylock/unlock pair).

Note that this entire mess should be properly fixed in the
printk/console layer, and not inflicted on each implementation.

For now just document what's going on and check that in all other
cases callers obey the locking rules.

v2: WARN_CONSOLE_UNLOCKED already checks for oops_in_progress
(something else that should be fixed I guess), hence remove the
open-coded check I've had.

0a64ce6e54 kernel/panic: Drop unblank_screen call
console_unblank() does this too (called in both places right after),
and with a lot more confidence inspiring approach to locking.

Reconstructing this story is very strange:

In b61312d353 ("oops handling: ensure that any oops is flushed to
the mtdoops console") it is claimed that a printk(" "); flushed out
the console buffer, which was removed in e3e8a75d2a ("[PATCH]
Extract and use wake_up_klogd()"). In todays kernels this is done way
earlier in console_flush_on_panic with some really nasty tricks. I
didn't bother to fully reconstruct this all, least because the call to
bust_spinlock(0); gets moved every few years, depending upon how the
wind blows (or well, who screamed loudest about the various issue each
call site caused).

Before that commit the only calls to console_unblank() where in s390
arch code.

The other side here is the console->unblank callback, which was
introduced in 2.1.31 for the vt driver. Which predates the
console_unblank() function by a lot, which was added (without users)
in 2.4.14.3. So pretty much impossible to guess at any motivation
here. Also afaict the vt driver is the only (and always was the only)
console driver implementing the unblank callback, so no idea why a
call to console_unblank() was added for the mtdooops driver - the
action actually flushing out the console buffers is done from
console_unlock() only.

Note that as prep for the s390 users the locking was adjusted in
2.5.22 (I couldn't figure out how to properly reference the BK commit
from the historical git trees) from a normal semaphore to a trylock.

Note that a copy of the direct unblank_screen() call was added to
panic() in c7c3f05e34 ("panic: avoid deadlocks in re-entrant console
drivers"), which partially inlined the bust_spinlocks(0); call.

Long story short, I have no idea why the direct call to unblank_screen
survived for so long (the infrastructure to do it properly existed for
years), nor why it wasn't removed when the console_unblank() call was
finally added. But it makes a ton more sense to finally do that than
not - it's just better encapsulation to go through the console
functions instead of doing a direct call, so let's dare. Plus it
really does not make much sense to call the only unblank
implementation there is twice, once without, and once with appropriate
locking.

566f9c9f89 vt: Clear selection before changing the font
When changing the console font with ioctl(KDFONTOP) the new font size
can be bigger than the previous font. A previous selection may thus now
be outside of the new screen size and thus trigger out-of-bounds
accesses to graphics memory if the selection is removed in
vc_do_resize().

Prevent such out-of-memory accesses by dropping the selection before the
various con_font_set() console handlers are called.

39cdb68c64 vt: fix memory overlapping when deleting chars in the buffer
A memory overlapping copy occurs when deleting a long line. This memory
overlapping copy can cause data corruption when scr_memcpyw is optimized
to memcpy because memcpy does not ensure its behavior if the destination
buffer overlaps with the source buffer. The line buffer is not always
broken, because the memcpy utilizes the hardware acceleration, whose
result is not deterministic.

Fix this problem by using replacing the scr_memcpyw with scr_memmovew.

d9ebb906a4 tty/vt: consolemap: make parameters of inverse_translate() saner
- int use_unicode -> bool: it's used as bool at some places already, so
  make it explicit.
- int glyph -> u16: every caller passes a u16 in. So make it explicit
  too. And remove a negative check from inverse_translate() as it never
  could be negative.

3a2b2eb556 console: consume APC, DM, DCS
The Linux console's VT102 implementation already consumes OSC
("Operating System Command") sequences, probably because that's how
palette changes are transmitted.

In addition to OSC, there are three other major clases of ANSI control
strings: APC ("Application Program Command"), PM ("Privacy Message"),
and DCS ("Device Control String").  They are handled similarly to OSC in
terms of termination.

Add three new enumerated states, one for each of these types.  All three
are handled the same way right now--they simply consume input until
terminated.  I hope to expand upon this firmament in the future.  Add
new predicate ansi_control_string(), returning true for any of these
states.  Replace explicit checks against ESosc with calls to this
function.  Transition to these states appropriately from the escape
initiation (ESesc) state.

This was motivated by the following Notcurses bugs:

 https://github.com/dankamongmen/notcurses/issues/2069

where standard VT sequences are not consumed by the Linux console.  It's
not necessary that the Linux console *support* these sequences, but it
ought *consume* these well-specified classes of sequences.

Tested by sending a variety of escape sequences to the console, and
verifying that they still worked, or were now properly consumed.
Verified that the escapes were properly terminated at a generic level.
Verified that the Notcurses tools continued to show expected output on
the Linux console, except now without escape bleedthrough.

39b7b42be4 tty: stop using alloc_tty_driver
alloc_tty_driver was deprecated by tty_alloc_driver in commit
7f0bc6a68e (TTY: pass flags to alloc_tty_driver) in 2012.

I never got into eliminating alloc_tty_driver until now. So we still
have two functions for allocating drivers which might be confusing. So
get rid of alloc_tty_driver uses to eliminate it for good in the next
patch.

Note we need to switch return value checking as tty_alloc_driver uses
ERR_PTR. And flags are now a parameter of tty_alloc_driver.

3b0c406124 tty: Fix out-of-bound vmalloc access in imageblit
This issue happens when a userspace program does an ioctl
FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO passing the fb_var_screeninfo struct
containing only the fields xres, yres, and bits_per_pixel
with values.

If this struct is the same as the previous ioctl, the
vc_resize() detects it and doesn't call the resize_screen(),
leaving the fb_var_screeninfo incomplete. And this leads to
the updatescrollmode() calculates a wrong value to
fbcon_display->vrows, which makes the real_y() return a
wrong value of y, and that value, eventually, causes
the imageblit to access an out-of-bound address value.

To solve this issue I made the resize_screen() be called
even if the screen does not need any resizing, so it will
"fix and fill" the fb_var_screeninfo independently.

fa7501e57e tty: remove tty_operations::chars_in_buffer for non-buffering
The only user of tty_ops::chars_in_buffer is tty_chars_in_buffer. And it
considers tty_ops::chars_in_buffer optional. In case it's NULL, zero is
returned. So remove all those chars_in_buffer from tty_ops which return
zero. (Zero means such driver doesn't buffer.)

Group the ctrl members under a single struct called ctrl. The new struct
contains 'pgrp', 'session', 'pktstatus', and 'packet'. 'pktstatus' and
'packet' used to be bits in a bitfield. The struct also contains the
lock protecting them to share the same cache line.

Note that commit c545b66c69 (tty: Serialize tcflow() with other tty
flow control changes) added a padding to the original bitfield. It was
for the bitfield to occupy a whole 64b word to avoid interferring stores
on Alpha (cannot we evaporate this arch with weird implications to C
code yet?). But it doesn't work as expected as the padding
(tty_struct::ctrl_unused) is aligned to a 8B boundary too and occupies
some bytes from the next word.

So make it reliable by:
1) setting __aligned of the struct -- that aligns the start, and
2) making 'unsigned long unused[0]' as the last member of the struct --
   pads the end.

Add a kerneldoc comment for this grouped members.

ed5aecd3da tty: remove broken r3964 line discipline
Noone stepped up in the past two years since it was marked as BROKEN by
commit c7084edc3f (tty: mark Siemens R3964 line discipline as BROKEN).
Remove the line discipline for good.

Three remarks:
* we remove also the uapi header (as noone is able to use that interface
  anyway)
* we do *not* remove the N_R3964 constant definition from tty.h, so it
  remains reserved.
* in_interrupt() check is now removed from vt's con_put_char. Noone else
  calls tty_operations::put_char from interrupt context.

211b4d42b7 tty: fix memory leak in vc_deallocate
syzbot reported memory leak in tty/vt.
The problem was in VT_DISALLOCATE ioctl cmd.
After allocating unimap with PIO_UNIMAP it wasn't
freed via VT_DISALLOCATE, but vc_cons[currcons].d was
zeroed.

ff2047fb75 vt: drop old FONT ioctls
Drop support for these ioctls:
* PIO_FONT, PIO_FONTX
* GIO_FONT, GIO_FONTX
* PIO_FONTRESET

As was demonstrated by commit 90bfdeef83 (tty: make FONTX ioctl use
the tty pointer they were actually passed), these ioctls are not used
from userspace, as:
1) they used to be broken (set up font on current console, not the open
   one) and racy (before the commit above)
2) KDFONTOP ioctl is used for years instead

Note that PIO_FONTRESET is defunct on most systems as VGA_CONSOLE is set
on them for ages. That turns on BROKEN_GRAPHICS_PROGRAMS which makes
PIO_FONTRESET just return an error.

We are removing KD_FONT_FLAG_OLD here as it was used only by these
removed ioctls. kd.h header exists both in kernel and uapi headers, so
we can remove the kernel one completely. Everyone includeing kd.h will
now automatically get the uapi one.

There are now unused definitions of the ioctl numbers and "struct
consolefontdesc" in kd.h, but as it is a uapi header, I am not touching
these.

Further there was only one user ever.
- Android's loadfont, busybox and console-tools only ever use OP_GET
  and OP_SET
- fbset documentation only mentions the kernel cmdline font: option,
  not anything else.
- systemd used OP_COPY before release 232 published in Nov 2016

Now unfortunately the crucial report seems to have gone down with
gmane, and the commit message doesn't say much. But the pull request
hints at OP_COPY being broken

So in other words, this never worked, and the only project which
foolishly every tried to use it, realized that rather quickly too.

Instead of trying to fix security issues here on dead code by adding
missing checks, fix the entire thing by removing the functionality.

Note that systemd code using the OP_COPY function ignored the return
value, so it doesn't matter what we're doing here really - just in
case a lone server somewhere happens to be extremely unlucky and
running an affected old version of systemd. The relevant code from
font_copy_to_all_vcs() in systemd was:

f8d1653dae vt: defer kfree() of vc_screenbuf in vc_do_resize()
syzbot is reporting UAF bug in set_origin() from vc_do_resize() [1], for
vc_do_resize() calls kfree(vc->vc_screenbuf) before calling set_origin().

Unfortunately, in set_origin(), vc->vc_sw->con_set_origin() might access
vc->vc_pos when scroll is involved in order to manipulate cursor, but
vc->vc_pos refers already released vc->vc_screenbuf until vc->vc_pos gets
updated based on the result of vc->vc_sw->con_set_origin().

Preserving old buffer and tolerating outdated vc members until set_origin()
completes would be easier than preventing vc->vc_sw->con_set_origin() from
accessing outdated vc members.

syzbot is reporting general protection fault in do_con_write() [1] caused
by vc->vc_screenbuf == ZERO_SIZE_PTR caused by vc->vc_screenbuf_size == 0
caused by vc->vc_cols == vc->vc_rows == vc->vc_size_row == 0 caused by
fb_set_var() from ioctl(FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO) on /dev/fb0 , for
gotoxy(vc, 0, 0) from reset_terminal() from vc_init() from vc_allocate()
 from con_install() from tty_init_dev() from tty_open() on such console
causes vc->vc_pos == 0x10000000e due to
((unsigned long) ZERO_SIZE_PTR) + -1U * 0 + (-1U << 1).

I don't think that a console with 0 column or 0 row makes sense. And it
seems that vc_do_resize() does not intend to allow resizing a console to
0 column or 0 row due to

  new_cols = (cols ? cols : vc->vc_cols);
  new_rows = (lines ? lines : vc->vc_rows);

exception.

Theoretically, cols and rows can be any range as long as
0 < cols * rows * 2 <= KMALLOC_MAX_SIZE is satisfied (e.g.
cols == 1048576 && rows == 2 is possible) because of

  vc->vc_size_row = vc->vc_cols << 1;
  vc->vc_screenbuf_size = vc->vc_rows * vc->vc_size_row;

in visual_init() and kzalloc(vc->vc_screenbuf_size) in vc_allocate().

Since we can detect cols == 0 or rows == 0 via screenbuf_size = 0 in
visual_init(), we can reject kzalloc(0). Then, vc_allocate() will return
an error, and con_write() will not be called on a console with 0 column
or 0 row.

We need to make sure that integer overflow in visual_init() won't happen.
Since vc_do_resize() restricts cols <= 32767 and rows <= 32767, applying
1 <= cols <= 32767 and 1 <= rows <= 32767 restrictions to vc_allocate()
will be practically fine.

This patch does not touch con_init(), for returning -EINVAL there
does not help when we are not returning -ENOMEM.

The cursor code used to use magic constants, ANDs, ORs, and some macros.
Redefine all this to make some sense.

In particular:
* Drop CUR_DEFAULT, which is CUR_UNDERLINE. CUR_DEFAULT was used only
  for cur_default variable initialization, so use CUR_UNDERLINE there to
  make obvious what's the default.
* Drop CUR_HWMASK. Instead, define CUR_SIZE() which explains it more.
  And use it all over the places.
* Define few more masks and bits which will be used in next patches
  instead of magic constants.
* Define CUR_MAKE to build up cursor value.

754bda9807 vc: extract detecting control characters from do_con_write
Move the control characters detection to a separate function dubbed
vc_is_control. It makes the 14 subexpressions a "bit" more readable. And
also simplifies next patches.

It moves also CTRL_ACTION and CTRL_ALWAYS to this new function, as they
are used exclusively here. While at it, these are converted to static
const variables.

And we use "& BIT()" instead of ">>" and "& 1".

Checked using symbolic execution (klee), that the old and new
behaviors are the same.

0d1ffef578 vt: move rescan_last_byte label earlier
This removes duplicated initialization of variables (after reordering
'c' initialization).

It will also allow for eliminating whole translation into a separate
function in the next patch.

Note that vc_state, vc_utf etc. are checked with every rescan now. But
they are immutable for non-control characters where rescan might be
only necessary.

694d8a487c vt: separate unicode handling into vc_translate_unicode
do_con_write is complicated enough. Extract unicode handling to a
separate function. For do_con_write, 249 LOCs lowered to 183 lines.

Use diff -w -b to see the difference is neligible -- mostly whitespace
and use of 'return's instead of 'continue's.

a018180cc3 vt: move vc_translate to vt.c and rename it
vc_translate is used only in vt.c, so move the definition from a header
there. Also, it used to be a macro, so be modern and make a static
inline from it. This makes the code actually readable.

And as a preparation for next patches, rename it to vc_translate_ascii.
vc_translate will be a wrapper for both unicode and this one.

de53ce0427 vt: use tty_insert_flip_string in respond_string
Pass the length of a string to respond_string and use
tty_insert_flip_string instead of a loop with tty_insert_flip_char. This
simplifies the processing on the tty side.

The added strlens are optimized during constant folding and propagation
and the result are proper constants in assembly.

dbee4cffa1 vt: convert vc_tab_stop to bitmap
vc_tab_stop is used as a bitmap, but defined as an unsigned int array.
Switch it to bitmap and convert all users to the bitmap interface.

Note the difference in behavior! We no longer mask the top 24 bits away
from x, hence we do not wrap tabs at 256th column. Instead, we silently
drop attempts to set a tab behind 256 columns. And we will also seek by
'\t' to the rightmost column, when behind that boundary. I do not think
the original behavior was desired and that someone relies on that. If
this turns out to be the case, we can change the added 'if's back to
masks here and there instead...

(Or we can increase the limit as fb consoles now have 240 chars here.
And they could have more with higher than my resolution, of course.)
