drm/atomic: Pass the full state to planes atomic disable and update
The current atomic helpers have either their object state being passed as
an argument or the full atomic state.

The former is the pattern that was done at first, before switching to the
latter for new hooks or when it was needed.

Let's convert the remaining helpers to provide a consistent interface,
this time with the planes atomic_update and atomic_disable.

The conversion was done using the coccinelle script below, built tested on
all the drivers.

drm: Rename plane atomic_check state names
Most drivers call the argument to the plane atomic_check hook simply
state, which is going to conflict with the global atomic state in a
later rework. Let's rename it to new_plane_state (or new_state depending
on the convention used in the driver).

This was done using the coccinelle script below, and built tested:

820c170717 drm/gem: Move drm_gem_fb_prepare_fb() to GEM atomic helpers
The function drm_gem_fb_prepare_fb() is a helper for atomic modesetting,
but currently located next to framebuffer helpers. Move it to GEM atomic
helpers, rename it slightly and adopt the drivers. Same for the rsp
simple-pipe helper.

Compile-tested with x86-64, aarch64 and arm. The patch is fairly large,
but there are no functional changes.

v3:
	* remove out-comented line in drm_gem_framebuffer_helper.h
	  (Maxime)
v2:
	* rename to drm_gem_plane_helper_prepare_fb() (Daniel)
	* add tutorial-style documentation

drm/vc4: hvs: Fix buffer overflow with the dlist handling
Commit 0a038c1c29 ("drm/vc4: Move LBM creation out of
vc4_plane_mode_set()") changed the LBM allocation logic from first
allocating the LBM memory for the plane to running mode_set,
adding a gap in the LBM, and then running the dlist allocation filling
that gap.

The gap was introduced by incrementing the dlist array index, but was
never checking whether or not we were over the array length, leading
eventually to memory corruptions if we ever crossed this limit.

vc4_dlist_write had that logic though, and was reallocating a larger
dlist array when reaching the end of the buffer. Let's share the logic
between both functions.

drm/vc4: Correct lbm size and calculation
LBM base address is measured in units of pixels per cycle.
That is 4 for 2711 (hvs5) and 2 for 2708.

We are wasting 75% of lbm by indexing without the scaling.
But we were also using too high a size for the lbm resulting
in partial corruption (right hand side) of vertically
scaled images, usually at 4K or lower resolutions with more layers.

The physical RAM of LBM on 2711 is 8 * 1920 * 16 * 12-bit
(pixels are stored 12-bits per component regardless of format).

The LBM address indexes work in units of pixels per clock,
so for 4 pixels per clock that means we have 32 * 1920 = 60K

drm/vc4: plane: Create more planes
Let's now create more planes that can be affected to all the CRTCs.

vc4 has 3 CRTCs, 1 primary and 1 cursor each, and was having 24 (8
planes per CRTC) overlays.

However, vc5 has 5 CRTCs, so keeping the same logic would put us at 50
planes which is well above the 32 planes limit imposed by DRM.

Using 16 seems like a good tradeoff between staying under 32 and yet
providing enough planes.

drm/vc4: plane: Move additional planes creation to driver
So far the plane creation was done when each CRTC was bound, and those
planes were only tied to the CRTC that was registering them.

This causes two main issues:
  - The planes in the vc4 hardware are actually not tied to any CRTC, but
    can be used with every combination

  - More importantly, so far, we allocate 10 planes per CRTC, with 3 CRTCs.
    However, the next generation of hardware will have 5 CRTCs, putting us
    well above the maximum of 32 planes currently allowed by DRM.

This patch is the first one in a series of patches that will take down both
of these issues so that we can support the next generation of hardware
while keeping a good amount of planes.

We start by changing the way the planes are registered to first registering
the primary planes for each CRTC in the CRTC bind function as we used to,
but moving the overlay and cursor creation to the main driver bind
function, after all the CRTCs have been bound, and make the planes
associated to all CRTCs.

This will slightly change the ID order of the planes, since the primary
planes of all CRTCs will be first, and then a pattern of 8 overlays, 1
cursor plane for each CRTC.

This shouldn't cause any trouble since the ordering between the planes is
preserved though.

c16b85559d drm/vc4: fix fb references in async update
Async update callbacks are expected to set the old_fb in the new_state
so prepare/cleanup framebuffers are balanced.

Calling drm_atomic_set_fb_for_plane() (which gets a reference of the new
fb and put the old fb) is not required, as it's taken care by
drm_mode_cursor_universal() when calling drm_atomic_helper_update_plane().

drm: Remove users of drm_format_(horz|vert)_chroma_subsampling
drm_format_horz_chroma_subsampling and drm_format_vert_chroma_subsampling
are basically a lookup in the drm_format_info table plus an access to the
hsub and vsub fields of the appropriate entry.

Most drivers are using this function while having access to the entry
already, which means that we will perform an unnecessary lookup. Removing
the call to these functions is therefore more efficient.

Some drivers will not have access to that entry in the function, but in
this case the overhead is minimal (we just have to call drm_format_info()
to perform the lookup) and we can even avoid multiple, inefficient lookups
in some places that need multiple fields from the drm_format_info
structure.

This is amplified by the fact that most of the time the callers will have
to retrieve both the vsub and hsub fields, meaning that they would perform
twice the lookup.

drm/vc4: Add a load tracker to prevent HVS underflow errors
The HVS block is supposed to fill the pixelvalve FIFOs fast enough to
meet the requested framerate. The problem is, the HVS and memory bus
bandwidths are limited, and if we don't take these limitations into
account we might end up with HVS underflow errors.

This patch is trying to model the per-plane HVS and memory bus bandwidth
consumption and take a decision at atomic_check() time whether the
estimated load will fit in the HVS and membus budget.

Note that we take an extra margin on the memory bus consumption to let
the system run smoothly when other blocks are doing heavy use of the
memory bus. Same goes for the HVS limit, except the margin is smaller in
this case, since the HVS is not used by external components.

The driver currently claims to support RGB formats for the associated

1d4118ca16 drm/vc4: Rework the async update logic
vc4_plane_atomic_async_check() was only based on the
state->{crtc,src}_{w,h} which was fine since scaling was not allowed on
the cursor plane.

We are about to change that to properly support underscan, and, in order
to make the async check more reliable, we call vc4_plane_mode_set()
from there and check that only the pos0, pos2 and ptr0 entries in the
dlist have changed.

In vc4_plane_atomic_async_update(), we no longer call
vc4_plane_atomic_check() since vc4_plane_mode_set() has already been
called in vc4_plane_atomic_async_check(), and we don't need to allocate
a new LBM region (we reuse the one from the current state).

Note that we now have to manually update each field of the current
plane state since it's no longer updated in place (not sure we have
to sync all of them, but it's harmless if we do).
We also drop the vc4_plane_async_set_fb() call (ptr0 dlist entry has
been properly updated in vc4_plane_mode_set())

5a43911fd2 drm/vc4: Fix NULL pointer dereference in the async update path
vc4_plane_atomic_async_update() calls vc4_plane_atomic_check()
which in turn calls vc4_plane_setup_clipping_and_scaling(), and since
commit 58a6a36fe8 ("drm/vc4: Use
drm_atomic_helper_check_plane_state() to simplify the logic"), this
function accesses plane_state->state which will be NULL when called
from the async update path because we're passing the current plane
state, and plane_state->state has been assigned to NULL in
drm_atomic_helper_swap_state().

Pass the new state instead of the current one (the new state has
->state set to a non-NULL value).

0560054da5 drm/vc4: ->x_scaling[1] should never be set to VC4_SCALING_NONE
For the YUV conversion to work properly, ->x_scaling[1] should never
be set to VC4_SCALING_NONE, but vc4_get_scaling_mode() might return
VC4_SCALING_NONE if the horizontal scaling ratio exactly matches the
horizontal subsampling factor. Add a test to turn VC4_SCALING_NONE
into VC4_SCALING_PPF when that happens.

The old ->x_scaling[0] adjustment is dropped as I couldn't find any
mention to this constraint in the spec and it's proven to be
unnecessary (I tested various multi-planar YUV formats with scaling
disabled, and all of them worked fine without this adjustment).

Use that instead of duplicating the logic.

070473bcf7 drm: add missing ctx argument to plane transitional helpers
In commits:
34a2ab5e06 ("drm: Add acquire ctx parameter to ->update_plane")
1931529448 ("drm: Add acquire ctx parameter to ->plane_disable")

a pointer to a drm_modeset_acquire_ctx structure was added as an
argument to the method prototypes. The transitional helpers are
supposed to be directly plugged in as implementations of these
methods, but doing so generates a warning. Add the missing
argument.

A number of buggy users were added for drm_plane_helper_disable()

6da2ec5605 treewide: kmalloc() -> kmalloc_array()
The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This
patch replaces cases of:

        kmalloc(a * b, gfp)

with:
        kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp)

as well as handling cases of:

        kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp)

with:

        kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp)

as it's slightly less ugly than:

        kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp)

This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:

        kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp)

though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.

Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.

The tools/ directory was manually excluded, since it has its own
implementation of kmalloc().

The Coccinelle script used for this was:

// Fix redundant parens around sizeof().

e065a8dd30 drm/vc4: Add support for SAND modifier.
This is the format generated by VC4's H.264 engine, and preferred by
the ISP as well. By displaying SAND buffers directly, we can avoid
needing to use the ISP to rewrite the SAND H.264 output to linear
before display.

This is a joint effort by Dave Stevenson (who wrote the initial patch
and DRM demo) and Eric Anholt (drm_fourcc.h generalization, safety
checks, RGBA support).

v2: Make the parameter macro give all of the middle 48 bits (suggested
    by Daniels). Fix fourcc_mod_broadcom_mod()'s bits/shift being
    swapped. Mark NV12/21 as supported, not YUV420.

1e871d65e3 drm/vc4: Add missing formats to vc4_format_mod_supported().
Daniel's format_mod_supported() patch predated Dave's for NV21/61, and
I didn't catch that when rebasing. This is a problem since the
formats are now getting validated before being passed to the driver's

3257ec797d drm/vc4: plane: Expand the lower bits by repeating the higher bits
The vc4 HVS uses an internal RGB888 representation of the frames, and will
by default expand formats using a lower depth using zeros.

This causes an issue when we try to use other compositing software such as
pixman that fill the missing bits by repeating the higher significant bits.
As such, we can't check the display output in a reliable way by doing a
software composition and an hardware one and compare both.

To prevent this, force the same behaviour so that we can do such things.

This ioctl will allow us to purge inactive userspace buffers when the

For now, the purge logic is rather dumb in that it does not try to
release only the amount of BO needed to meet the last CMA alloc request
but instead purges all objects placed in the purgeable pool as soon as
we experience a CMA allocation failure.

Note that the in-kernel BO cache is always purged before the purgeable
cache because those objects are known to be unused while objects marked
as purgeable by a userspace application/library might have to be
restored when they are marked back as unpurgeable, which can be
expensive.

e6fc3b6855 drm: Plumb modifiers through plane init
This is the plumbing for supporting fb modifiers on planes. Modifiers
have already been introduced to some extent, but this series will extend
this to allow querying modifiers per plane. Based on this, the client to
enable optimal modifications for framebuffers.

This patch simply allows the DRM drivers to initialize their list of
supported modifiers upon initializing the plane.

98830d91da drm/vc4: Add T-format scanout support.
The T tiling format is what V3D uses for textures, with no raster
support at all until later revisions of the hardware (and always at a
large 3D performance penalty). If we can't scan out V3D's format,
then we often need to do a relayout at some stage of the pipeline,
either right before texturing from the scanout buffer (common in X11
without a compositor) or between a tiled screen buffer right before
scanout (an option I've considered in trying to resolve this
inconsistency, but which means needing to use the dirty fb ioctl and
having some update policy).

T-format scanout lets us avoid either of those shadow copies, for a
massive, obvious performance improvement to X11 window dragging
without a compositor. Unfortunately, enabling a compositor to work
around the discrepancy has turned out to be too costly in memory
consumption for the Raspbian distribution.

Because the HVS operates a scanline at a time, compositing from T does
increase the memory bandwidth cost of scanout. On my 1920x1080@32bpp
display on a RPi3, we go from about 15% of system memory bandwidth
with linear to about 20% with tiled. However, for X11 this still ends
up being a huge performance win in active usage.

This patch doesn't yet handle src_x/src_y offsetting within the tiled
buffer. However, we fail to do so for untiled buffers already.

6d24c1c591 drm/vc4: Don't wait for vblank when updating the cursor
Commonly used desktop environments such as xfce4 and gnome

49d29a077a drm: vc4: adapt to new behaviour of drm_crtc.c
When drm_crtc_init_with_planes() was orignally added
(in drm_crtc.c, e13161af80
drm: Add drm_crtc_init_with_planes() (v2)), it only checked for "primary"
being non-null. If that was the case, it modified primary->possible_crtcs.

Then, when support for cursor planes was added
(fc1d3e44ef drm: Allow drivers to register
cursor planes with crtc), the same behaviour was implemented for cursor
planes.

vc4_plane_init() since its inception has passed 0xff as "possible_crtcs"
parameter to drm_universal_plane_init(). With a change in drm_crtc.c
(7abc7d4751 drm: don't override
possible_crtcs for primary/cursor planes) passing 0xff results in primary's
possible_crtcs set to 0xff (cursor was updated manually by vc4_crtc.c).
Consequently, it would be allowed to use the primary plane from CRTC 1 (for
example) on CRTC 0, which would result in the overlay and cursors being
buried.

The drm_mm range manager claimed to support top-down insertion, but it
was neither searching for the top-most hole that could fit the

In order to search the range efficiently, we create a secondary index
