264fb03497 ALSA: hda/realtek: add quirk for Lenovo Thinkpad X12 speakers
For this specific device on Lenovo Thinkpad X12 tablet, the verbs were
dumped by qemu running a guest OS that init this codec properly.
After studying the dump, it turns out that
the same quirk used by the other Lenovo devices can be reused.

The patch was tested working against the mainline kernel.

f30741cded ALSA: hda/realtek: Fix audio regression on Mi Notebook Pro 2020
Commit 5aec989130 ("ALSA: hda/realtek - ALC236 headset MIC recording
issue") is to solve recording issue met on AL236, by matching codec
variant ALC269_TYPE_ALC257 and ALC269_TYPE_ALC256.

This match can be too broad and Mi Notebook Pro 2020 is broken by the
patch.

Instead, use codec ID to be narrow down the scope, in order to make
ALC256 unaffected.

266d17a8c0 Driver core changes for 5.18-rc1
Here is the set of driver core changes for 5.18-rc1.

Not much here, primarily it was a bunch of cleanups and small updates:
 	- kobj_type cleanups for default_groups
 	- documentation updates
 	- firmware loader minor changes
 	- component common helper added and take advantage of it in many
drivers (the largest part of this pull request).

There will be a merge conflict in drivers/power/supply/ab8500_chargalg.c
with your tree, the merge conflict should be easy (take all the
 changes).

All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
 problems.

2a845837e3 ALSA: hda/realtek: Fix deadlock by COEF mutex
The recently introduced coef_mutex for Realtek codec seems causing a
deadlock when the relevant code is invoked from the power-off state;
then the HD-audio core tries to power-up internally, and this kicks
off the codec runtime PM code that tries to take the same coef_mutex.

In order to avoid the deadlock, do the temporary power up/down around
the coef_mutex acquisition and release. This assures that the
power-up sequence runs before the mutex, hence no re-entrance will
happen.

41a8601302 ALSA: hda/realtek: Fix silent output on Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master (newer chipset)
Newer versions of the X570 Master come with a newer revision of the
mainboard chipset - the X570S. These boards have the same ALC1220 codec
but seem to initialize the codec with a different parameter in Coef 0x7
which causes the output audio to be very low. We therefore write a
known-good value to Coef 0x7 to fix that. As the value is the exact same
as on the other X570(non-S) boards the same quirk-function can be shared
between both generations.

This commit adds the Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master to the list of boards
using the ALC1220_FIXUP_GB_X570 quirk. This fixes both, the silent output
and the no-audio after reboot from windows problems.

This work has been tested by the folks over at the level1techs forum here:

b837a9f5ab ALSA: hda: realtek: Fix race at concurrent COEF updates
The COEF access is done with two steps: setting the index then read or
write the data. When multiple COEF accesses are performed
concurrently, the index and data might be paired unexpectedly.
In most cases, this isn't a big problem as the COEF setup is done at
the initialization, but some dynamic changes like the mute LED may hit
such a race.

For avoiding the racy COEF accesses, this patch introduces a new
mutex coef_mutex to alc_spec, and wrap the COEF accessing functions
with it.

There are several PCI ids associated with HP EliteBook 855 G8 Notebook
PC. Commit 0e68c4b11f ("ALSA: hda/realtek: fix mute/micmute LEDs for
HP 855 G8") covers 0x103c:0x8896, while this commit covers 0x103c:0x8895
which needs some additional work on top of the quirk from 0e68c4b11f.

Note that the device can boot up with working speakers and micmute LED
without this patch, but the success rate would be quite low (order of
16 working boots across 709 boots) at least for the built-in drivers
scenario. This also means that there are some timing issues during early
boot and this patch is a workaround.

With this patch applied speakers and headphones are consistenly working,
as well as mute/micmute LEDs and the internal microphone.

c193300867 ALSA: hda/realtek - Fix silent output on Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master after reboot from Windows
This patch addresses an issue where after rebooting from Windows into Linux
there would be no audio output.

It turns out that the Realtek Audio driver on Windows changes some coeffs
which are not being reset/reinitialized when rebooting the machine. As a
result, there is no audio output until these coeffs are being reset to
their initial state. This patch takes care of that by setting known-good
(initial) values to the coeffs.

We initially relied upon alc1220_fixup_clevo_p950() to fix some pins in the
connection list. However, it also sets coef 0x7 which does not need to be
touched. Furthermore, to prevent mixing device-specific quirks I introduced
a new alc1220_fixup_gb_x570() which is heavily based on
alc1220_fixup_clevo_p950() but does not set coeff 0x7 and fixes the coeffs
that are actually needed instead.

This new alc1220_fixup_gb_x570() is believed to also work for other boards,
like the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Extreme and the newer Gigabyte Aorus X570S
Master. However, as there is no way for me to test these I initially only
enable this new behaviour for the mainboard I have which is the Gigabyte
X570(non-S) Aorus Master.

I tested this patch on the 5.15 branch as well as on master and it is
working well for me.

In laptop 'HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-eb1xxx/8811' both front and

layout and by initializing the amplifier which needs a GPIO pin to be
set to 1 then 0, similar to the existing HP Spectre x360 14 model.

In order to have volume control, both front and rear speakers were
forced to use the DAC1.

This patch also correctly map the mute LED but since there is no
microphone on/off switch exposed by the alsa subsystem it never turns
on by itself.

There are still known audio issues in this laptop: headset microphone
doesn't work, the button to mute/unmute microphone is not yet mapped,
the LED of the mute/unmute speakers doesn't seems to be exposed via

Also the determine_headset_type() often returns the omtp type by a

sound at all. Because most of the headset are ctia type nowadays and
some machines have the fixed ctia type audio jack, it is possible this
machine has the fixed ctia jack too. Here we set this mic jack to
fixed ctia type, this could avoid the mic type detection mistake and
make the ctia headset work stable.

The headphone mic is not working on Dell Latitude laptops with ALC3254.

13d9c6b998 ALSA: hda/realtek: Workaround for conflicting SSID on ASUS ROG Strix G17
ASUS ROG Strix G17 has the very same PCI and codec SSID (1043:103f) as
ASUS TX300, and unfortunately, the existing quirk for TX300 is broken
on ASUS ROG. Actually the device works without the quirk, so we'll
need to clear the quirk before applying for this device.
Since ASUS ROG has a different codec (ALC294 - while TX300 has
ALC282), this patch adds a workaround for the device, just clearing
the codec->fixup_id by checking the codec vendor_id.

It's a bit ugly to add such a workaround there, but it seems to be the
simplest way.

This patch adds the control of the GPIO bit via the existing pcm_hook

In 9bbb94e57d ("ALSA: hda/realtek: fix static noise on ALC285 Lenovo

0x12 pin requirement from the entry. This made the second chance table
Thinkpad jack entry unreachable as the pin configurations became
identical.

Revert the 0x12 pin requirement removal and move Thinkpad jack pin quirk
back to the primary pin table as they can co-exist when more specific
configurations come first.

Add a more targeted pin quirk for Lenovo devices that have 0x12 as
0x40000000.

Tested on Yoga 6 (AMD) laptop.

d1ee66c5d3 ALSA: hda/realtek: fix mic boost on Intel NUC 8
Fix two bugs with the Intel HDA Realtek ALC233 sound codec
present in Intel NUC NUC8i7BEH and probably a few other similar
NUC models.

These codecs advertise a 4-level microphone input boost amplifier on
pin 0x19, but the highest two boost settings do not work correctly,
and produce only low analog noise that does not seem to contain any
discernible signal. There is an existing fixup for this exact problem
but for a different PCI subsystem ID, so we re-use that logic.

Changing the boost level also triggers a DC spike in the input signal
that bleeds off over about a second and overwhelms any input during
that time. Thankfully, the existing fixup has the side effect of
making the boost control show up in userspace as a mute/unmute switch,
and this keeps (e.g.) PulseAudio from fiddling with it during normal
input volume adjustments.

Finally, the NUC hardware has built-in inverted stereo mics. This
patch also enables the usual fixup for this so the two channels cancel
noise instead of the actual signal.

On the Dell machines which connect the dmic to the PCH, if we open
the gnome-sound-setting and unplug the headset, this issue will
happen. Those machines disable the auto-mute by ucm and has no
internal mic in the input source, so the update_headset_mode() will
not be called by cap_sync_hook or automute_hook when unplugging, and
because the gnome-sound-setting is opened, the codec will not enter
the runtime_suspend state, so the update_headset_mode() will not be
called by alc_resume when unplugging. In this case the
hp_automute_hook is called when unplugging, so add
update_headset_mode() calling to this function.

On this machine, the internal mic is not connected to the codec, the

determine_headset_type() is only 80ms, the delay is too short to
correctly determine the headset type, the fail rate is nearly 99% when
users plug the headset with the normal speed.

Other codecs set several hundred ms delay time, so here I change the
delay time to 850ms for alc2x4 series, after this change, the fail
rate is zero unless users plug the headset slowly on purpose.

With the HDA driver, if the headset buttons are supported, an audio
Jack will be created for them. This audio Jack is a bit confusing to

And in addition, the driver already builds a headphone Jack and a mic
Jack, and most of those buttons are used for headphone playback, so
do some change to bind those buttons to the headphone Jack. After this
change, the key events are generated from NID 0x55, and are reported
to the input layer via headphone jack (NID 0x21).

If there is no headphone Jack, then build an audio jack to support
those buttons same as previously.

c3bb2b5219 ALSA: hda/realtek: Quirk for HP Spectre x360 14 amp setup
HP Spectre x360 14 model (PCI SSID 103c:87f7) seems requiring a unique

c72b9bfe0f ALSA: hda/realtek: make bass spk volume adjustable on a yoga laptop
This change could fix 2 issues on this machine:
 - the bass speaker's output volume can't be adjusted, that is because
the bass speaker is routed to the DAC (Nid 0x6) which has no volume
   control.
 - after plugging a headset with vol+, vol- and pause buttons on it,
press those buttons, nothing happens, this means those buttons
don't work at all. This machine has alc287 codec, need to add the
codec id to the disable/enable_headset_jack_key(), then the headset

The quirk of ALC285_FIXUP_THINKPAD_HEADSET_JACK could fix both of these

c84bfedce6 ALSA: hda/realtek: Fix bass speaker DAC assignment on Asus Zephyrus G14
ASUS Zephyrus G14 has two speaker pins, and the auto-parser tries to
assign an individual DAC to each pin as much as possible.
Unfortunately the third DAC has no volume control unlike the two DACs,
and this resulted in the inconsistent speaker volumes.

As a workaround, wire both speaker pins to the same DAC by modifying
the existing quirk (ALC289_FIXUP_ASUS_GA401) applied to this device.
Since this quirk entry is chained by another, we need to avoid
applying the DAC assignment change for it. Luckily, there is another
quirk entry (ALC289_FIXUP_ASUS_GA502) doing the very same thing, so we
can chain to the GA502 quirk instead.

Note that this patch uses a new flag of the generic parser,
obey_preferred_dacs, for enforcing the DACs.

a6e7d0a4bd ALSA: hda: fix jack detection with Realtek codecs when in D3
In case HDA controller becomes active, but codec is runtime suspended,
jack detection is not successful and no interrupt is raised. This has
been observed with multiple Realtek codecs and HDA controllers from
different vendors. Bug does not occur if both codec and controller are
active, or both are in suspend. Bug can be easily hit on desktop systems
with no built-in speaker.

The problem can be fixed by powering up the codec once after every
controller runtime resume. Even if codec goes back to suspend later, the
jack detection will continue to work. Add a flag to 'hda_codec' to
describe codecs that require this flow from the controller driver.
Modify __azx_runtime_resume() to use pm_request_resume() to make the
intent clearer.

Mark all Realtek codecs with the new forced_resume flag.

3f74249057 ALSA: hda/realtek - Couldn't detect Mic if booting with headset plugged
We found a Mic detection issue on many Lenovo laptops, those laptops
belong to differnt models and they have different audio design like
internal mic connects to the codec or PCH, they all have this problem,
the problem is if plugging a headset before powerup/reboot the
machine, after booting up, the headphone could be detected but Mic
couldn't. If we plug out and plug in the headset, both headphone and
Mic could be detected then.

Through debugging we found the codec on those laptops are same, it is
alc257, and if we don't disable the 3k pulldown in alc256_shutup(),
the issue will be fixed. So far there is no pop noise or power
consumption regression on those laptops after this change.

6a6660d049 ALSA: hda/realtek - Improved routing for Thinkpad X1 7th/8th Gen
There've been quite a few regression reports about the lowered volume
(reduced to ca 65% from the previous level) on Lenovo Thinkpad X1
after the commit d2cd795c4e ("ALSA: hda - fixup for the bass speaker
on Lenovo Carbon X1 7th gen"). Although the commit itself does the
right thing from HD-audio POV in order to have a volume control for
bass speakers, it seems that the machine has some secret recipe under
the hood.

Through experiments, Benjamin Poirier found out that the following
routing gives the best result:
* DAC1 (NID 0x02) -> Speaker pin (NID 0x14)
* DAC2 (NID 0x03) -> Shared by both Bass Speaker pin (NID 0x17) &
                     Headphone pin (0x21)
* DAC3 (NID 0x06) -> Unused

DAC1 seems to have some equalizer internally applied, and you'd get
again the output in a bad quality if you connect this to the
headphone pin. Hence the headphone is connected to DAC2, which is now
shared with the bass speaker pin. DAC3 has no volume amp, hence it's
not connected at all.

For achieving the routing above, this patch introduced a couple of
workarounds:

* The connection list of bass speaker pin (NID 0x17) is reduced not to
  include DAC3 (NID 0x06)
* Pass preferred_pairs array to specify the fixed connection

Here, both workarounds are needed because the generic parser prefers
the individual DAC assignment over others.

When the routing above is applied, the generic parser creates the two
volume controls "Front" and "Bass Speaker". Since we have only two
DACs for three output pins, those are not fully controlling each
output individually, and it would confuse PulseAudio. For avoiding
the pitfall, in this patch, we rename those volume controls to some
unique ones ("DAC1" and "DAC2"). Then PulseAudio ignore them and
concentrate only on the still good-working "Master" volume control.
If a user still wants to control each DAC volume, they can still
change manually via "DAC1" and "DAC2" volume controls.
