Current hardware settings:
Combined:       4

e7231f49d5 virtio-net: Map NAPIs to queues
Use netif_queue_set_napi to map NAPIs to queue IDs so that the mapping
can be accessed by user apps. Note that the netif_queue_set_napi
currently requires RTNL, so care must be taken to ensure RTNL is held on
paths where this API might be reached.

The paths in the driver where this API can be reached appear to be:

  - ndo_open, ndo_close, which hold RTNL so no driver change is needed.
  - rx_pause, rx_resume, tx_pause, tx_resume are reached either via
    an ethtool ioctl or via XSK - neither path requires a driver change.
  - power management paths (which call open and close), which have been
    updated to hold/release RTNL.

$ ethtool -i ens4 | grep driver
driver: virtio_net

$ sudo ethtool -L ens4 combined 4

$ ./tools/net/ynl/pyynl/cli.py \
       --spec Documentation/netlink/specs/netdev.yaml \
       --dump queue-get --json='{"ifindex": 2}'
[{'id': 0, 'ifindex': 2, 'napi-id': 8289, 'type': 'rx'},
 {'id': 1, 'ifindex': 2, 'napi-id': 8290, 'type': 'rx'},
 {'id': 2, 'ifindex': 2, 'napi-id': 8291, 'type': 'rx'},
 {'id': 3, 'ifindex': 2, 'napi-id': 8292, 'type': 'rx'},
 {'id': 0, 'ifindex': 2, 'type': 'tx'},
 {'id': 1, 'ifindex': 2, 'type': 'tx'},
 {'id': 2, 'ifindex': 2, 'type': 'tx'},
 {'id': 3, 'ifindex': 2, 'type': 'tx'}]

Note that virtio_net has TX-only NAPIs which do not have NAPI IDs, so
the lack of 'napi-id' in the above output is expected.

e13b6da704 virtio-net: tweak for better TX performance in NAPI mode
There are several issues existed in start_xmit():

- Transmitted packets need to be freed before sending a packet, this
  introduces delay and increases the average packets transmit
  time. This also increase the time that spent in holding the TX lock.
- Notification is enabled after free_old_xmit_skbs() which will
  introduce unnecessary interrupts if TX notification happens on the
  same CPU that is doing the transmission now (actually, virtio-net
  driver are optimized for this case).

So this patch tries to avoid those issues by not cleaning transmitted
packets in start_xmit() when TX NAPI is enabled and disable
notifications even more aggressively. Notification will be since the
beginning of the start_xmit(). But we can't enable delayed
notification after TX is stopped as we will lose the
notifications. Instead, the delayed notification needs is enabled
after the virtqueue is kicked for best performance.

Performance numbers:

1) single queue 2 vcpus guest with pktgen_sample03_burst_single_flow.sh
   (burst 256) + testpmd (rxonly) on the host:

- When pinning TX IRQ to pktgen VCPU: split virtqueue PPS were
  increased 55% from 6.89 Mpps to 10.7 Mpps and 32% TX interrupts were
  eliminated. Packed virtqueue PPS were increased 50% from 7.09 Mpps to
  10.7 Mpps, 99% TX interrupts were eliminated.

- When pinning TX IRQ to VCPU other than pktgen: split virtqueue PPS
  were increased 96% from 5.29 Mpps to 10.4 Mpps and 45% TX interrupts
  were eliminated; Packed virtqueue PPS were increased 78% from 6.12
  Mpps to 10.9 Mpps and 99% TX interrupts were eliminated.

2) single queue 1 vcpu guest + vhost-net/TAP on the host: single
   session netperf from guest to host shows 82% improvement from
   31Gb/s to 58Gb/s, %stddev were reduced from 34.5% to 1.9% and 88%
   of TX interrupts were eliminated.

3ddccbefeb virtio_net: correct netdev_tx_reset_queue() invocation point
When virtnet_close is followed by virtnet_open, some TX completions can
possibly remain unconsumed, until they are finally processed during the
first NAPI poll after the netdev_tx_reset_queue(), resulting in a crash
[1]. Commit b96ed2c97c ("virtio_net: move netdev_tx_reset_queue() call
before RX napi enable") was not sufficient to eliminate all BQL crash
cases for virtio-net.

This issue can be reproduced with the latest net-next master by running:
`while :; do ip l set DEV down; ip l set DEV up; done` under heavy network
TX load from inside the machine.

netdev_tx_reset_queue() can actually be dropped from virtnet_open path;
the device is not stopped in any case. For BQL core part, it's just like
traffic nearly ceases to exist for some period. For stall detector added
to BQL, even if virtnet_close could somehow lead to some TX completions
delayed for long, followed by virtnet_open, we can just take it as stall
as mentioned in commit 6025b9135f ("net: dqs: add NIC stall detector
based on BQL"). Note also that users can still reset stall_max via sysfs.

So, drop netdev_tx_reset_queue() from virtnet_enable_queue_pair(). This
eliminates the BQL crashes. As a result, netdev_tx_reset_queue() is now
explicitly required in freeze/restore path. This patch adds it to
immediately after free_unused_bufs(), following the rule of thumb:
netdev_tx_reset_queue() should follow any SKB freeing not followed by
netdev_tx_completed_queue(). This seems the most consistent and
streamlined approach, and now netdev_tx_reset_queue() runs whenever
free_unused_bufs() is done.

7db956707f virtio_net: refactor the xmit type
Because the af-xdp will introduce a new xmit type, so I refactor the
xmit type mechanism first.

We know both xdp_frame and sk_buff are at least 4 bytes aligned.
For the xdp tx, we do not pass any pointer to virtio core as data,
we just need to pass the len of the packet. So we will push len
to the void pointer. We can make sure the pointer is 4 bytes aligned.

And the data structure of AF_XDP also is at least 4 bytes aligned.

So the last two bits of the pointers are free, we can't use these to
distinguish them.

50bfcaedd7 virtio_net: Update rss when set queue
RSS configuration should be updated with queue number. In particular, it
should be updated when (1) rss enabled and (2) default rss configuration
is used without user modification.

During rss command processing, device updates queue_pairs using
rss.max_tx_vq. That is, the device updates queue_pairs together with
rss, so we can skip the sperate queue_pairs update
(VIRTIO_NET_CTRL_MQ_VQ_PAIRS_SET below) and return directly.

Also remove the `vi->has_rss ?` check when setting vi->rss.max_tx_vq,

86a48a00ef virtio_net: Support dynamic rss indirection table size
When reading/writing virtio_net_ctrl_rss, we get the indirection table
size from vi->rss_indir_table_size, which is initialized in
virtnet_probe(). However, the actual size of indirection_table was set
as VIRTIO_NET_RSS_MAX_TABLE_LEN=128. This collision may cause issues if
the vi->rss_indir_table_size exceeds 128.

This patch instead uses dynamic indirection table, allocated with
vi->rss after vi->rss_indir_table_size initialized. And free it in
virtnet_remove().

In virtnet_commit_rss_command(), sgs for rss is initialized differently
with hash_report. So indirection_table is not used if !vi->has_rss, and
then we don't need to alloc indirection_table for hash_report only uses.

6aacd14844 virtio-net: fix overflow inside virtnet_rq_alloc
When the frag just got a page, then may lead to regression on VM.
Specially if the sysctl net.core.high_order_alloc_disable value is 1,
then the frag always get a page when do refill.

Which could see reliable crashes or scp failure (scp a file 100M in size
to VM).

The issue is that the virtnet_rq_dma takes up 16 bytes at the beginning
of a new frag. When the frag size is larger than PAGE_SIZE,
everything is fine. However, if the frag is only one page and the
total size of the buffer and virtnet_rq_dma is larger than one page, an
overflow may occur.

The commit f9dac92ba9 ("virtio_ring: enable premapped mode whatever
use_dma_api") introduced this problem. And we reverted some commits to
fix this in last linux version. Now we try to enable it and fix this
bug directly.

Here, when the frag size is not enough, we reduce the buffer len to fix
this problem.

61bf0009a7 dim: pass dim_sample to net_dim() by reference
net_dim() is currently passed a struct dim_sample argument by value.
struct dim_sample is 24 bytes. Since this is greater 16 bytes, x86-64
passes it on the stack. All callers have already initialized dim_sample
on the stack, so passing it by value requires pushing a duplicated copy
to the stack. Either witing to the stack and immediately reading it, or
perhaps dereferencing addresses relative to the stack pointer in a chain
of push instructions, seems to perform quite poorly.

In a heavy TCP workload, mlx5e_handle_rx_dim() consumes 3% of CPU time,
94% of which is attributed to the first push instruction to copy
dim_sample on the stack for the call to net_dim():
// Call ktime_get()
  0.26 |4ead2:   call   4ead7 <mlx5e_handle_rx_dim+0x47>
// Pass the address of struct dim in %rdi
       |4ead7:   lea    0x3d0(%rbx),%rdi
// Set dim_sample.pkt_ctr
       |4eade:   mov    %r13d,0x8(%rsp)
// Set dim_sample.byte_ctr
       |4eae3:   mov    %r12d,0xc(%rsp)
// Set dim_sample.event_ctr
  0.15 |4eae8:   mov    %bp,0x10(%rsp)
// Duplicate dim_sample on the stack
 94.16 |4eaed:   push   0x10(%rsp)
  2.79 |4eaf1:   push   0x10(%rsp)
  0.07 |4eaf5:   push   %rax
// Call net_dim()
  0.21 |4eaf6:   call   4eafb <mlx5e_handle_rx_dim+0x6b>

To allow the caller to reuse the struct dim_sample already on the stack,
pass the struct dim_sample by reference to net_dim().

d95d9a31ac virtio_net: fix integer overflow in stats
Static analysis on linux-next has detected the following issue
in function virtnet_stats_ctx_init, in drivers/net/virtio_net.c :

        if (vi->device_stats_cap & VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ) {
                queue_type = VIRTNET_Q_TYPE_CQ;
                ctx->bitmap[queue_type]   |= VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ;
                ctx->desc_num[queue_type] += ARRAY_SIZE(virtnet_stats_cvq_desc);
                ctx->size[queue_type]     += sizeof(struct virtio_net_stats_cvq);
        }

ctx->bitmap is declared as a u32 however it is being bit-wise or'd with
VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ and this is defined as 1 << 32:

include/uapi/linux/virtio_net.h:#define VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ (1ULL << 32)

..and hence the bit-wise or operation won't set any bits in ctx->bitmap
because 1ULL < 32 is too wide for a u32.

In fact, the field is read into a u64:

       u64 offset, bitmap;
....
       bitmap = ctx->bitmap[queue_type];

so to fix, it is enough to make bitmap an array of u64.

c11a49d58a virtio_net: Fix mismatched buf address when unmapping for small packets
Currently, the virtio-net driver will perform a pre-dma-mapping for
small or mergeable RX buffer. But for small packets, a mismatched address
without VIRTNET_RX_PAD and xdp_headroom is used for unmapping.

That will result in unsynchronized buffers when SWIOTLB is enabled, for
example, when running as a TDX guest.

This patch unifies the address passed to the virtio core as the address of
the virtnet header and fixes the mismatched buffer address.

Changes from v2: unify the buf that passed to the virtio core in small
and merge mode.
Changes from v1: Use ctx to get xdp_headroom.

After virtnet_napi_enable() is called, the following path is hit:
  __napi_poll()
    -> virtnet_poll()
      -> virtnet_poll_cleantx()
        -> netif_tx_wake_queue()

That wakes the TX queue and allows skbs to be submitted and accounted by
BQL counters.

Then netdev_tx_reset_queue() is called that resets BQL counters and
eventually leads to the BUG in dql_completed().

Move virtnet_napi_tx_enable() what does BQL counters reset before RX
napi enable to avoid the issue.

b50f2af9fb virtio-net: check feature before configuring the vq coalescing command
Virtio spec says:

	The driver MUST have negotiated the VIRTIO_NET_F_VQ_NOTF_COAL
	feature when issuing commands VIRTIO_NET_CTRL_NOTF_COAL_VQ_SET
	and VIRTIO_NET_CTRL_NOTF_COAL_VQ_GET.

So we add the feature negotiation check to
virtnet_send_{r,t}x_ctrl_coal_vq_cmd as a basis for the next bugfix patch.

f8321fa751 virtio_net: Fix napi_skb_cache_put warning

The issue arises because virtio is assuming it's running in NAPI context
even when it's not, such as in the netpoll case.

To resolve this, modify virtnet_poll_tx() to only set NAPI when budget
is available. Same for virtnet_poll_cleantx(), which always assumed that
it was in a NAPI context.

a4e7ba7027 virtio_net: xsk: rx: support recv small mode
In the process:
1. We may need to copy data to create skb for XDP_PASS.
2. We may need to call xsk_buff_free() to release the buffer.
3. The handle for xdp_buff is difference from the buffer.

If we pushed this logic into existing receive handle(merge and small),
we would have to maintain code scattered inside merge and small (and big).
So I think it is a good choice for us to put the xsk code into an
independent function.
